BAM Construct UK signs up to Net zero carbon emissions by 2030
BAM Construct UK will ensure all its direct operations and all buildings it develops or directly controls, will achieve net zero carbon in operation by 2030.
In signing the World Green Building Council Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, the company is agreeing to being independently audited on progress, publicly reporting on performance, and actively influence its clients and wider stakeholders to also achieve net zero.

King's Cross Sports Hall
BAM completes King’s Cross Sports Hall, constructed out of 838m2 of timber (690m3 of CLT and 147m3 glulam, from 100% PEFC chain of custody sources). But it is more than just a leisure facility – it has been designed to have multiple uses and is highly adaptable for a long lifespan. For the first two years the lower floor will serve as a location for the Construction Skills Centre, providing local people with access to training and jobs while a new facility is constructed for them. This floor will then transform into the new community sports hall for LB Camden, complementing the gym and fitness suite on the first floor.
UK Contractors Declare
BAM is a founding signatory of UK Contractors Declare, signing up to a declaration of climate and biodiversity emergency. We will work with several other leading contractors to mobilise and coordinate climate & biodiversity action in the built environment, with specific action aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions and limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, by no later than 2050.
GRESB
For the second year BAM participated in Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), which assesses the sustainability performance of real estate and infrastructure portfolios and assets worldwide.
BAM PPP submitted four assessments, including two buildings managed by our BAM FM team. Somerset Schools achieved four stars, scoring 75/100 in the Environment section, for actions in reducing energy consumption. West Dunbartonshire Schools achieved three stars, demonstrating skill at stakeholder engagement, scoring 76/100.

Science Based Targets
Royal BAM Group sets a new science-based target for greenhouse gas emission reduction, committing to reduce CO2 intensity by 50% in 2030 (compared to 2015), and joining a limited group of companies with validated science-based targets.
UKGBC
BAM has been involved in developing two guidance documents for use across the built environment:
Net Zero Carbon Buildings: A framework definition - A framework definition providing clarity on how to achieve net zero carbon in construction and operation. At the launch event, James Wimpenny said “Contractors, clients, supply chains need to radically change the way we procure, design and deliver buildings. Smart use of renewable technologies and efficient use of low carbon materials are a priority"
Circular economy guidance for construction clients - Guidance addressing the commercial realities associated with making the circular economy happen. It provides support and evidence to assist clients in setting clear strategies that ensure budgets, timescales and risks are minimised and mitigated.
Grown in Britain Woodland Hero 2018
John Cosford, Regional Buyer, is awarded Grown in Britain's Woodland Hero 2018. Accepting the award, John said, "I am extremely pleased to win this award, which recognises the importance of the work we are undertaking to educate different parts of the construction supply chain about the benefits and qualities of British timber."
Circular lighting solution
Following their involvement in a joint learning series with the Supply Chain Sustainability School, Whitecroft lighting worked with BAM to deliver a circular lighting solution for the BAM FM-managed Cheshire Police Authority Headquarters and Force Training Centre.
CLIC Sargent
In our second year of partnership with CLIC Sargent, BAM raised £83,000. Since 2017 we have raised more than £164,000 for CLIC Sargent, and will continue to work with them in 2019.
Sustainable FM Index
BAM FM retained its Gold status on the Sustainble Facilities Management Index. This is a great achievement, as the SFMI is continuously raising the bar for each category, making is more difficult to achieve Gold.
Considerate Constructors Scheme
15 awards, including one Gold, eight Silver and five Bronze. One site was also achieved a Most Considerate Site Runner Up award.
Four Pancras Square
Four Pancras Square won the BREEAM 2018 award for 'Commercial Projects – Post-Construction'. Awarded to the project that successfully delivered performance and impact in practice, the judges agreed it provided an exemplary demonstration of the value of feedback loops in design and procurement.
Windmill Community Campus
Windmill Community Campus, built by BAM Construction in Scotland, is highly commended for the CIBSE Building Performance Award in the category Project of the Year, Public Use.
G4C Constructing Excellence Midlands Awards
Josh Prescott was awarded Student of the Year, Phil Eves awarded Mentor of the Year, and Sarah Guy was Highly Commended Young Trainee of the Year, at the 2017 Constructing Excellence Midlands Awards.
Investing in Talent Awards 2017
In recognition of the work our trainees and graduates did as part of their enhancing lives challenge, BAM was a finalist in the Investing in Talent Awards 2017, Corporate Responsibility Scheme of the Year, having delivered 75 students engagement activities, connected with over 2,500 students, worked with nine charities and raised over £15,000.
Coventry City Council
BAM was awarded a Gold accreditation as part of Coventry City Council's Business Charter for Social Responsibility.
BAM takes on first hydrogen powered vehicles
BAM decided to take part in a funding competition with The Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), a government scheme supporting the roll out and market growth of fuel cell electric vehicles. BAM was amongst the winners, gaining funding to support the purchase and trialling of two light commercial vehicles.
North West Charity Awards
BAM's North West region was highly commended in the 'Outstanding Charity Support by a Large Companies’ Award at the North West Charity Awards in 2017. This was for their continued work with Antisocial Behaviour Reduction Charity, Mancunian Way, since 2014.
CRASH
BAM received an Above and Beyond Award from CRASH, to recognise our commitment as a Patron Company for the past 15 years, our contributions of professional expertise and materials, and fundraising for the charity by our staff.
Trainee and Graduate Challenge
Our trainee and graduates raised £15,000 and enhanced 4,257 lives as part of their Enhancing Lives Challenge. The winning team donated to a local food and clothing bank, donated numerous items to local schools, as well as building a sustainability centre on one of their local sites.
