The construction industry was not a sector I was particularly looking to work in, but it has turned out to be really valuable. I think working at BAM made me realise that I need to be more open-minded about opportunities I would not necessarily have considered at first.

The circular economy: a new resource model for the built environment http://sustainability.bam.co.uk/insights/2014-09-18-the-circular-economy-a-new-resource-model-for-the-built-environment http://sustainability.bam.co.uk/insights/2014-09-18-the-circular-economy-a-new-resource-model-for-the-built-environment As I recently sat on the panel for a talk about the circular economy at RWM 2014, the resource and waste management solutions show, I reminded the audience of the intrinsic link between the waste industry and the construction industry. We shouldn’t be thinking of materials as waste but as resource. And with 260 million tonnes of materials used in construction every year, we need to think carefully about how we are using these resources to get the most value out of their reuse.

Well the first thing I thought was ‘what on earth are SIDS?’ - I’d never heard of them, and what have they got to do with you or me?

Bright ideas make sure our activities on site have a positive impact on the local community, enhance the environment and improve the health and wellbeing of our workforce.

Along with other BAM volunteers, I spent the day lending a hand to 19 local schools and colleges, who were digging, planting, painting, sawing, drilling and shifting tonnes of earth, all to create spectacular show gardens that the students had designed themselves!

Recently, concrete has come out from behind plasterboard and beneath ground to become a high quality technical material of choice. It can be stronger, cheaper, more durable option with low maintenance costs. Designers have embraced its flexibility to allow more uninterrupted floor space and for its excellent light reflective and thermal properties, and local production.

How do we design out waste in the circular economy? http://sustainability.bam.co.uk/insights/2014-03-26-how-do-we-design-out-waste-in-the-circular-economy http://sustainability.bam.co.uk/insights/2014-03-26-how-do-we-design-out-waste-in-the-circular-economy Construction waste is often assumed to be the result of the building contractor’s inefficiencies, but much of the waste that is produced is actually as a result of the design. More than 80 million tonnes of waste is estimated to have been produced by the construction industry in 2011, therefore to achieve a circular economy with zero waste it is essential that the building, the individual elements within it and the packaging these components arrive in are well designed.

Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink http://sustainability.bam.co.uk/insights/2014-03-21-water-water-everywhere-and-not-a-drop-to-drink http://sustainability.bam.co.uk/insights/2014-03-21-water-water-everywhere-and-not-a-drop-to-drink Of all the water on the earth only 3% is fresh water and this is distributed unevenly over the world – often places with the highest water demand for manufacturing have the least water available. I attended a very interesting seminar regarding the future resilience of water at Ecobuild. With the recent UK floods you may be forgiven for thinking that water scarcity isn’t really a big issue. But this is a global challenge and consumer decisions we make in the UK have a big impact on water use in other countries.

Testing a product before it goes to market and assessing how it works in practice isn’t new. Today, products are tested to ensure they’re safe etc… and then tested in use to check they live up to their claims. This hasn’t been a common approach in the construction industry though.
