'Tis the season to plant trees

Ruth Beavers   27 Nov 2017

With winter having now arrived, the tree planting season has begun! National Tree week is from 25 November to 3 December, and we’ve seen many people from across our business using their two volunteering days to get outside and help plant some trees.

Ruth Beavers, Regional Sustainability Advisor in the North West, decided to use one of her volunteering days to plant trees in Debdale Park, where they are creating a new Heroes Wood. This particular scheme is part of the ‘City of Trees’ movement that we have recently become a partner of. City of Trees aims to restore underused and unloved woodland in the Greater Manchester area. Ruth helped to plant 19 young trees throughout the day, and said it was a “great day - cold (but thankfully dry), and was a fantastic way to meet other people and enhance my local environment”.

This isn’t the first time that our employees have helped to plant trees – last year colleagues from BAM Design, BAM Construction in the South East and BAM Construct UK’s head office helped to plant young trees in Hertfordshire’s Heartwood forest.  They helped to plant 1,500 trees in a day – although they were only saplings, so slightly smaller than the ones that Ruth planted!

Members of our sustainability team were out planting trees again at Heartwood as part of the UKGBC’s Gold Leaf member tree planting day. Almost 100 people donned their wellies and winter coats to help plant almost 3,000 trees in one of their final planting sessions at England’s largest new native forest.

Julia Messenger, Sustainability Advisor, said, “The event was a really good way to network with like-minded people, and it’s really nice to know you’ve helped contribute to a place that will be around for many years. We also learnt more about the different areas of the site which include ancient woodland, wild flower meadows as well as the newly planted areas. It will be great to see how it all develops in the future!”

Tree planting is a great way to spend a day, either to get some time outdoors, or as part of a team building event. So why not sign up to plant some trees in your local area, or take time to visit your local wood?
